The Chairman of the Philip Green Memorial Trust travelled to Nepal to meet the disabled children living in Mahandrenegar in the far wesern region of the country. Together with Handicap International, on of the few aid agencies working in this remote area of the country, we hope to donate the funds needed to build this centre. At present, there are very few facilities in this region, which means that the number of children receiving prostheses, physio-therapy and general medical attention is very limited. Some families have to travel over fifty miles by foot to reach the current facility only to find that there is no help available due to lack of money and man-power.

The reason that the Trust has agreed to fund this project is because Cyril is a veteran of the Far East campaign during World War II and had the privilege of serving alongside the Gurkhas, that fine brigade of soldiers who come from Nepal. Their country is the fourth poorest country in the world with 10% of its population being disabled, many of whom are children.

Once built, the centre will not only offer medical help but also educate the people of the region in avoiding accidents as many of the disabilities are caused through carelessness. For instance, by teaching children not to climb trees, unnecessary accidents can be avoided.

Work on the centre will begin at the end of October after the monsoon has ended. Once open, the centre will treat up to 1,300 children per year.
