| St MARY’s HOSPITAL, PADDINGTON |
| |
|
Every now and then those of us caught up in the busy working world encounter a situation which brings life crashing back into perspective. A brief tour of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St Mary’s Hospital does just that. The PICU opened at St Mary’s with just one bed in 1992. Since then it has flourished into a busy, eight-bedded unit, caring for children from all over London and the South East suffering from life threatening conditions such as meningitis, meningococcal septicemia and related diseases.
The Philip Green Memorial Trust has donated over £500,000 since 1992 to buy intensive care beds, a mobile response unit and numerous equipment to ensure St Mary’s stays at the forefront of paediatric care.
One patient who was bought to St Mary’s in 1993 suffering with meningitis was 9 year old Amber Bird. Amber was treated by Dr Parvis Habibi and his pioneering team and luckily made a full recovery. Amber, now a top international model, revisited the PICU at St Mary’s and met with some of the doctors who treated her together with representatives of the Philip Green Memorial Trust.
